Stair Bobsledding: A Collegiate National Pastime

Stair bobsledding needs to be an Olympic sport in 2012.

It's probably too late to qualify for this summer's London games, but come 2016, if this guy keeps up his training (i.e. alcohol consumption) and avoids more than a half dozen serious concussions, he will be the consensus odds-on favorite for gold.

To inspire yourself before you attempt stair bobsledding at home, watch his astounding trial run below. All to go get a Swiffer mop. That's dedication, people.

PETA: Kool with Khloe, Hating on Kim

Following her sister's flour bombing last week at the hands of an irritating PETA activist, Khloe Kardashian announced to the world yesterday that she was through with the company for whom she posed naked in 2008 (below).

In response, PETA has issued a statement that basically say: we understand. But your sister still sucks!

"We appreciate that Khloé will remain on the animals' side by not wearing fur - that's what counts," a rep for PETA tells E! News. "If one of our volunteers is responsible, it doesn't alter the fact that no animal deserves to be electrocuted, shot or poisoned for a bit of fur clothing.

Khloé is just defending her sister, and we know she has a good heart, so we wish her well. We just wish she also had more influence on her sister."

Sigh. Talk about a battle where this is no winner. Whose side do you take in the PETA versus Kim Kardashian feud?

48 feet: 'It's a really, really, really long snake!'

NEW YORK?? A strange sight is accosting visitors at Grand Central Station here this week: a gigantic snake. A life-size model of the 60-million-year-old Titanoboa has taken stage at the train terminal, an advertisement for a new documentary on the Smithsonian Channel.

"That thing would swallow me whole," Grand Central visitor Sarah Bouroque said when she saw the giant snake. "I'd have to run and hide if I saw that thing in real life."

Remains of the ancient Titanoboa snake, which weighed in at a whopping 2,500 pounds (more than 1,100 kilograms) and a length of 48 feet (almost 15 meters), were first found near fossilized plants, giant turtles and crocodiles dating back to the Paleocene Epoch (about 60 million years ago). This was when the world?s first known rain forest emerged, and dinosaurs no longer ruled the Earth.

"It was an actual animal? A real animal? It's huge, that's impressive," visitor Chris Wood said, eyeballing the giant reptile. "It's pretty impressive ? I don?t know what to make of it, really."

The snake is situated on an elevated platform, stuck eternally ingesting an ancient crocodile. It is on display in Grand Central's Vanderbilt Hall, just off the main concourse. [ Photos of Titanoboa in Grand Central ]

Natalie Remor brought her kids to see the giant snake: "Oh, it's great, they love it!" Her son Ian was especially enchanted by the sight. "It's a really, really, really long snake!" he said.

The startling discovery of Titanoboa was made by a team of scientists working in one of the world?s largest open-pit coal mines at Cerrejon in La Guajira, Colombia.

Another visitor, Jason Panaro, said of the giant snake: "It really puts things in perspective to see things like that."

The life-size replica of Titanoboa is going on display at the Smithsonian?s National Museum of Natural History on March 30, but before it gets settled in at its new home in Washington, D.C., the monster snake took a side trip to New York City for a two-day "layover."

On April 1, Smithsonian Channel premieres a new documentary, "Titanoboa: Monster Snake," which takes an in-depth look at the process of discovery and reconstruction of this prehistoric giant snake.

Antagonia.net - In which I have an awesome weekend, full of pictures!!!

This past weekend, _samalander came to visit for the first time.

The visit began with a conversation the night before. We exchanged phone numbers. I said ?In case there are a lot of big-haired ladies, I will be wearing a pink raincoat with a Mockingjay pin. Also I have a halo and am followed everywhere by a heavenly choir.? I think that helps people pick me out in a crowd.

Anyway, we found each other okay, if a little belatedly, at the bus station, and went back to my apartment in Queens. I had planned a little get-together than night, and had a bunch of friends coming by.

I have a very bad track record with parties. In elementary school, I was not only the bottom of the social ladder, but my birthday was in the summer, so I think I had a few parties where I actually had guest attendance in the negatives. I don?t know what that means, maybe that I had to go to their houses or something? I don?t know. When I turned 21, 20 people RSVPed yes to my party. Five people showed up. My parents had spent a ton of money on food and drinks, and I ended up calling my brother?s friends to round out the party. I kind of felt horrible about the whole thing. Anyway, I have a little bit of a complex about parties. So, I was sort of shocked when this one was extremely well-attended, and I assume that is because everyone heard Lauren was going to be there.

Anyway, it was a freaking awesome time. I made some awesome foods, including friend wontons full of PBJ as well as friend wontons full of nutella and bitter orange, and those were kind of the star of the party, even though I think the edamame spread I made was the best thing there. I made lots of drinks, and let my friends attempt to make me drinks, which ended in hilarity. There were also a whole bunch of H_E people there, which was kind of awesome: all four houses represented!!!

Anyway, party was a blast. The next morning we slept in pretty late (we being me, Lauren, and Jess), and then we went downtown to Jim Hanley?s Universe, and then to The Strand, where Lauren acquired a copy of

Then we headed back uptown and dropped into Dutch Kills, a bar in Queens, for a drink, before making our way out to Flushing for Korean food, and bubble tea.

Then we went home and ate the ice cream sandwiches that Jess had given us when we had gotten in on Friday:

After we ice cream sandwiched, I taught Jess and Lauren how to make a sazerac, and then we did dramatic readings from the aforementioned ?best book,? and finally went to bed.

The next day, we got up and went down to Katz?s Deli for lunch

And then, walking around, we found a place that had a sign about hibernating Puffs:

Oh, yeah, and Jess bought an amazing purple hat.

And we got some cream puffs at the Hibernating Puffs place:

And then we went to the giant Toys R Us in Times Square, because it is apparently tradition for visiting H_E members.

Lauren was Iron Man instead of Batman for like ten seconds:

Then it was time to send the Lauren home, and Jess came back to Queens with me for a little while before she departed as well.

The Humble Bundle is a hit across the board; it's a chance for players to pick up an assortment of cross- compatible and DRM-free games, via the always popular "pay what you want" pricing structure. And developers enjoy exposure and a considerable profit margin (despite their offerings going for less than the original asking price).

The latest from the Humble Bundle brings a few popular iOS games to Android users at long last, making the number of platforms up to four, alongside PC, Mac, and Linux. It's the second time such a bunch has been provided. It's also the first time certain games are finally appearing on the open source desktop operating system as well:

Of the four games that makes up the primary package, "Canabalt" is perhaps most notable. As one of indie gaming's first iPhone success stories, "Canabalt's"?development and success has been detailed heavily by journalists, and even discussed at game design universities.

The game has been slightly tweaked over the years, but the Android version contains dramatic updates, including two-player mode and support for 3D displays. "Swords & Soldiers" is offered as well, provided one puts down more than the average amount being pledged:?$6.29.

Pawlenty shaves presidential campaign debt

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? Former GOP presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty has whittled his campaign debt down to $17,500.

The remaining red ink is detailed in a monthly federal campaign report filed Tuesday. It is down considerably from the nearly half-million dollars Pawlenty owed last fall.

Minnesota's former governor dropped out of the White House race in August after a poor showing at the Iowa GOP's straw poll. He was worried about going deep into debt to keep his campaign afloat.

Pawlenty now backs former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the race. Romney has helped Pawlenty raise money to pay off the debt.

Three finance and political consultants are still waiting to get paid by Pawlenty's campaign. None is owed more than $7,500.

German Joys: The Decline of Employer-Paid Health Insurance

Whenever Europeans ask me about health care in the United States, I always have to set aside some time to explain that most (non-elderly, non-poor) Americans get health insurance through their employer. Europeans find this difficult to understand, because it seems so weird and arbitrary -- getting health insurance from the company that employs you makes just about as much sense as getting vaccinations from your plumber. Yet that's the way it works for many Americans. And it creates problems largely unknown in the rest of the industrialized world -- in particular, people stuck in jobs they don't like because they can't afford to lose their health insurance.

But, as Kevin Drum reports, the situation is changing fast:

Over the past decade, the number of Americans with employer-sponsored health insurance has dropped from about 70% down to nearly 50%. Note that this is for the non-elderly only, so it's not due to the aging of society or the growth of Medicare. This is working-age people only. As Krugman says, our weird employer-based health insurance scheme is "coming apart at the seams."

Most Americans simply have no clue how bizarre it is that we rely on employers to provide health insurance for most people. We've all grown up in this sytem, so it seems completely normal. But it's not. It happened through a weird combination of historical accidents, and it makes no sense. Why should an airplane manufacturer also be in the healthcare business? Why should you lose your health insurance if you get laid off? Why should your choice of doctor be limited by your employer's choice of insurance carrier? (And why should it change whenever your employer decides to change carriers?) Why should your boss be allowed to dock your paycheck if you don't get the medical "counseling" he deems necessary? (Yes, this is real. And it's rapidly making its way to a corporation near you.)

Mississippi Builds Insurance Exchange, Even As It Fights Health ...

Mississippi, a deeply red Southern state that is part of the Supreme Court case against the health law, is moving full speed ahead with one of the key provisions of that law: an online health insurance exchange.

Officials, including Mississippi Commissioner of Insurance Mike Chaney, meet for the inaugural meeting of the Mississippi Health Insurance Exchange Advisory Board in late January (Photo by Mississippi Insurance Department).

Unlike Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and other southern conservative states, Mississippi is well on its way to having an insurance exchange ready for operation by the 2014 deadline laid out by the health overhaul law.

"There are portions in that act that are good parts. And that part happens to be the exchange," says Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney, a Republican in his second term. "It's not a Republican idea. It is not a Democratic idea. It is a universal idea, and it has been around a long time.?

Efforts to set up an insurance exchange in Mississippi stretch back to before the Affordable Care Act passed, and an exchange had the outright support of former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (who later attached the state to the case against the federal health law).

Republican Senator Buck Clarke, from the small delta town of Hollandale, described the political path of the Mississippi exchange, as two different bills failed in last year's legislative session:? "The legislature couldn't come together. The whole thing died. And the insurance commissioner saw a different route to this to get this going. And it is just trying to comply with federal law that is on the books right now."

Chaney used a little-known rule, written by Clarke and passed into law in 2009, to lay the groundwork for the exchange.

"And the reason is very simple. It is important that we have an exchange that is designed by Mississippians. Operated by Mississippians. For Mississippians," says Chaney. "We don't want an exchange from the federal government that is one size fits all. What may work in New York state may not work in the state of Mississippi."

Chaney says Mississippi may appear to be an anomaly in the South but he points out that other states did not have the same legal options to avoid a political fight.

"It appears that I am swimming upstream against the trend of other southern states but here is the problem: other southern states did not have in place the statutory law that I had in place," Chaney says.

That statute is part of the state law governing Mississippi's high risk pool, which helps people with pre-existing conditions get insurance.? Lanny Craft, the executive director of the high risk pool quoted the rule allowing the pool to "serve as a mechanism to provide health and accident insurance to citizens of this state under any state or federal program designed to help a person obtain or maintain coverage."

A January study by the Center for Mississippi Health Policy showed that Mississippi has a lot to gain if an exchange functions in the state as the health law projects. The study found a working exchange could help lower the rate of people in the state without insurance from 20-percent to 7-percent.

The center's executive director Therese Hanna says that translates into 275,000 Mississippians who don't have insurance getting it. The exchanges are also a key mechanism to deliver the federal money that the health law provides to subsidize health insurance for Americans at certain income levels.

"About 229,000 [Mississippians] would be eligible for subsidies," Hanna says. "We are looking at approximately $900 million coming to the state because of that."

Even if the Supreme Court strikes down all or part of the federal health law, it is likely that Mississippi and the handful of other states that have begun to convene their exchange planning boards will continue to build their exchanges.

But for the whole law to survive, the Supreme Court will have to uphold it over objections like this one from exchange proponent Haley Barbour: "I do not believe the United States government has the right, the authority or power to force us to purchase health insurance any more than in the name of home land security they could force every American to have to buy a gun."
