Make Money from Your Hobby and Work From Home | Giggia

So you want to work from home. You wonder what you can possibly do to sustain this as a long-term option. Hobbies are a lot of fun, but you know what is even better? Turning your hobby and passion into a way to make money and work from home.

Don?t quit your day job just yet, here are just some ideas you can consider when starting a home-based business.

1. Auction sites
Many mums start by selling pre-owned items on online auction sites. Go through the wardrobes and the garage and look for items that you no longer use but are still in great condition, and sell them online. Selling second-hand items is a great way to earn a little money and be familiar and gain confidence in selling online. Check out eBay, WahmBay and QuickSales.

2. Arts and crafts
Do you love creating things? Are you into arts and crafts? You can channel your creative juices by creating products that you can sell to family, friends, and others. If you?re into creating scrapbooks, you can make and sell these to fellow mums who love to chronicle family milestones. You can also create one-of-a-kind accessories like necklace, earrings, bracelets, etc. There are some amazing sites to sell your arts and crafts online. Check out Etsy, Mums Who Make, and MadeIt.

3. Culinary
If cooking is more your forte, you can share your great recipes by selling your goodies. Food never goes out of style and everyone is always on the lookout for great-tasting and mouth-watering dishes. You can start by baking cakes or desserts and sell them to your friends and neighbors. Some mums also take advantage of the holidays like Christmas since food is always a great gift to give. You can also offer your services as a chef for birthdays, private dinners. Love cooking for large groups of people? If that is the case, you will want to look into starting your own catering business; you could even provide a lunchtime delivery service to local businesses and offices.

4. Writing
If writing is more your thing, you can offer your services as freelance writer. Writing covers a lot of things. You can be great at writing articles for publications, or work as a freelance scriptwriter. Some people are also great at writing sales letters or grant proposals. If more work comes your way, you can also hire other writers under your supervision. Check out Service Seeking, Professional PA and Cloud Crowd.

5. Direct selling
If you?re not the creative type or you don?t even know how to boil water, maybe you?re good at selling. Avon has always been known in providing women with the opportunity to earn by becoming an Avon Lady. Maybe this one is more suitable for you. If you have the gift of gab, then you can try your hand at direct selling. Check out these other great direct selling opportunities. Euro Skin Care and Tupperware.

6. Party planner
The parents of the new Duchess of Cambridge Catherine Middleton made a fortune by starting a home-based party planning business in 1987. Since then, they have transformed their business into an empire. Party planning is always a hit for busy people. Check out PartyPlanPortal, Silver Swan Jewellery, and Lorraine Lea Linen.

7. Graphics design
Graphics design is something you can always do at home. Many companies, including publications and advertising agencies, outsource design works instead of hiring regular employees. You only need a great computer, a reliable Internet connection, and lots of creative ideas.

Working at home is never easy but the rewards can be great. As with anything, perseverance, hard work and commitment are always the key to achieve your goals.

Borrowing Tools or Buying Your Own ? Small House Building

By Eric Brennan

via flickr

Without the right tools for the job, you may quickly find that your simple home improvement project is not so simple after all. Some home improvement and remodeling projects require specialty tools, making it impossible to complete the project without the right equipment. For instance, finishing a concrete slab correctly requires a bull float ? a specialty tool used to smooth hardening concrete. Without it, you might as well be pouring concrete on the moon. But the problem with using specialty tools for your small home construction or renovation projects is that they can cost big bucks to buy and you?ll probably only need them once. That?s where borrowing tools can come in handy versus buying your own.

Borrowing Tools

Borrowing tools from some people is akin to pulling teeth ? it?s a painful process that is avoided at all costs. Even if they do let you borrow their tools willingly, getting a specialty tool like an inside corner drywall finishing knife might be next to impossible when you?re looking to borrow one from your neighbor. So where do you get the tools you need for your one time construction project?

  • Tool Rental Suppliers- There is probably at least one or two of these companies within driving distance to your home. Many tool supply companies like SunBelt Rentals, RSC Equipment Rental and even Home Depot rent tools to the general public for a fee. Be sure to reserve any tools in advance as they may already be rented out when you arrive at the store.
  • Tool Lending Libraries- A tool lending library are often community organizations that lend tools (sometimes free of charge) to area residents. Some tool lending libraries only lend tools for community projects or to non-profit building projects so be sure to check out the details first. Use this list of tool lending libraries by state to help you find a tool lending library nearest your area.
  • Share Swapping- There are a number of online and local organizations that offer people a chance to buy, sell, trade, borrow and swap their tools with other people in their area. One such organization is BorrowTools.com. Here you can sign up to trade, borrow or rent tools from locals in your area.

Buying Tools

Sometimes, it can be tough to decide whether or not it?s best to borrow or buy the tools you need. Before you plan on buying tools for your building project, there are a few considerations that you should take note of prior to the purchase:

  • The $100/1 Year Rule- When purchasing any tools, it?s a good idea to follow the $100/1 year rule of thumb. If the tool you need will cost you more than $100 and you only plan on using it once in a year, then it?s best to rent or borrow it.
  • Warranties- One of the biggest problems with motorized equipment like chainsaws and specialty tools like wet tile saws is that they are expensive to buy, maintain and repair. Always be sure to buy an extended warranty on any motorized or specialty tools with heavy moving parts to ensure you?re not out of the big bucks when your new miter saw goes on the fritz.
  • Research- One of the biggest tool buying mistakes is impulse buying. Just because that circular saw has a laser on it, doesn?t make it better than a conventional circular saw. Visit several retailers for comparative pricing and go online to check any tool reviews. A good online resource is the Consumer Reports website. Here you can find detailed and accurate information on just about any new tool you might need for your building project.
  • Patience- More often than not, the tool you just bought at retail price will go on sale later on in the year. But postponing your home improvement project until the tools you need are on sale isn?t for everyone. Finding bargain tools at your a pawn shop, garage sale and even at church bazaars can all be great ways to get great deals on the tools you need without having to wait for the next big box retailers tools sale.

L os Angeles, CA, February 25, 2012 ?(PR.com)? Legal assistance for auto injury victims is now available from the LA based personal injury law firm, Grayson Grayson (http://www.markgraysonlaw.com/). The experienced personal injury attorneys at Grayson Grayson are providing legal assistance and free case evaluation for auto injury incidences. Victims having suffered personal injuries on account of a negligently operated automobile or vehicle can fill out the free case evaluation form at Grayson Grayson to avail legal expertise on auto injury accidents at: http://www.markgraysonlaw.com/expertise-areas/motorvehicle-accidents/.

With over 30 years of experience in representing personal injury victims, the Los Angeles personal injury lawyers are qualified to take up auto injury cases and represent victims in a court of law.

Auto injuries are not just dangerous but can prove life threatening as well. An injury from an automobile accident can adversely effect the victim and upset his life altogether. Victims sometimes are rendered out of work on account of injury and hence without earnings. However, California personal injury litigation allows auto injury victims to seek rightful monetary compensation from the responsible parties.

Mark Grayson from personal injury law firm, Grayson Grayson talked about auto injury incidences saying, ?People suffering from auto injuries have to deal with both physical pain and mental trauma along with the additional stress of the financial crunch that medical expenses bring on. Certain auto accidents, if one is lucky enough, may only result in damage to the vehicle but serious collisions can hurt the passengers as well. Whatever may be the loss, as a victim of someone else?s negligence you are entitled to a just compensation. An experienced attorney who knows all the intricacies of an auto injury case can help you in your legal undertaking and ensure that you receive the compensation due to you.

?Victims of automobile accidents or cases usually should not file or fight a personal injury case on their own as it involves a lot of investigation and legal expertise of a seasoned personal injury attorney. Especially in cases where the scenario involves more than one party where identifying the reckless driver or the real perpetrator is not that simple. Personal injury lawyers because of their experience are familiar with various auto injury scenarios and can throw a better light on your case,? continued Mark. ?The insurance companies hire trained professionals to represent them. Victims should too.?

Auburn's Katrynia Todd snags second Washington State girls wrestling title | Prep girls wrestling

Auburn girls wrestling champion Katrynia Todd knows a thing or two about celebrating.

With the roar of the Mat Classic XXIV crowd at the Tacoma Dome still ringing in her head after she?d captured, Todd had one thing on her mind.

?I went to McDonald?s,? Todd said. ?I had a McFlurry.?

Never has a frozen treat tasted so sweet to a well-deserving athlete.

Todd ? who finished first in the 140-pound class last season ? cut a swath through her competition at the meet, finishing her prep career with a pin at three minutes, nine seconds over Othello?s Allesha Reyes in the title match last Saturday.

According to her coach, Erik Opel, Todd got off to a rough start at the tournament before pinning down her second straight state title.

?She was concerned about her weight and hadn?t really eaten a lot,? Opel said. ?Plus there were probably some first-day jitters. But once she got something to eat, we got back on track, wrestling.?

After defeating Columbia River?s Samantha Schoene with a 15-3 major decision in the first round, however, Todd?s training and confidence took over.

?I think I was more experienced at the whole state thing this year,? Todd said. ?I was more used to all the people staring at you and all the pressure. I absolutely feel like I was a better wrestler this year. I feel like I went out there and took care of business.?

In the second round, Todd defeated Lacy Cannon of Mount Baker with a 6-1 decision, setting up a meeting with South Kitsap?s Amberlee Brasch on Saturday morning.

?My semifinals match was the hardest because it was 1-1 through three rounds before I got her down,? Todd said.

Once on the mat, Todd ground down Brasch, maneuvering her into a pin at the 5:52 mark.

The win set up a showdown against Reyes for the title, a match that Todd controlled from start to finish.

?The biggest difference from last year to this was she was a much more complete wrestler,? Opel said. ?She really worked on developing a lot more skill. I think that was a big difference for us this year.?

Now that Todd is done with her prep wrestling career, she has mixed feelings.

?I had all this pressure on me, so it just felt good to be done,? she said. ?But it?s kind of sad that I won?t wrestle in high school anymore, but hopefully I?ll wrestle in college.?

Todd already has received interest from wrestling programs at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, Ore., Menlo College in Atherton, Calif., and Midland University in Fremont, Neb.

Auburn wrestling head coach Dennis Herren appreciates what Todd has brought to the program, regardless of where she winds up.

?I honestly couldn?t be more inspired by Katrynia Todd,? he said. ?Both of her last matches were tough, but she broke them and pinned them. All of Auburn wrestling needs to be grateful to her for bringing us a state championship for the program this year.?

FOUR COMMON MISTAKES EMPLOYERS MAKE REGARDING ...

Campbell & BoydHere are four common mistakes made by employers that frequently deter their Workers Compensation savings:

1. Assuming that lower rates equate to lower costs. Don?t make the faulty assumption that your cost will go down automatically just because your rates have been reduced. Workers Compensation insurers use an experience modification factor to examine the actual losses incurred by the insured company and establish cost.

2. Believing that employers have little control when it comes to the expense of Workers Compensation. Employers know they?ve got to have Workers Compensation insurance. However, this acknowledgment shouldn?t lead to an employer thinking they?ve got to pay excessively for it; employers don?t and shouldn?t. Cost reduction starts at the hiring process. Initiate effective interview techniques and background checks to help ensure the right people are hired for the right jobs.

3. Neglecting or de-emphasizing cost containment and injury management during low rate periods. Safety should be an unyielding focus at all times. This will not only help a company reduce their claim numbers, but also keep their rates low over the long term. Employers need to keep an eye on the issues that frequently impact the costs of claims, such as medical care costs and lost wages. Also, remember that open claims mean escalating costs and negative impacts to the company?s modification factor.

4. Not making the association between cost containment and worker retention. Studies have shown that fewer accidents occur among skilled workforces, but even skilled workers can have an accident. A large part of whether or not an injured skilled employee returns to work is based on how their employer responds to them during and after recovery.

Update: Tornado watch canceled

At 6:49 p.m. forecasters with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C. canceled the tornado watch for Horry, Georgetown and Brunswick Counties.

No damage was reported in Horry County during the thunderstorms and one tree was reported down on North Magnolia Avenue in Andrews. The worst of the storms remained to the west and south of Myrtle Beach.

The tornado watch was initially put in place around 1 p.m. Friday with a 8 p.m. expiration.

At 6 p.m., winds in Myrtle Beach were moving at sustained speeds of 17 mph with the storm was weakening on the way to the beach.

The severe storms and tornado watch were put in place ahead of a cold front that is expected to drop temperatures as low as 42 degrees overnight from Friday?s 77 degree high.

Straight line winds were expected to be the biggest threat for the Grand Strand during the severe thunderstorms, forecasters said.

The heaviest of the storms were initially expected to start arriving in the area about 7 p.m. Friday, bringing up to 60 mph winds and rain, said Reid Hawkins, a meteorologist with the weather service.

?The system will produce strong low-level winds and cold air aloft. This combination will provide the ingredients for a squall line to develop to the west of the region and move rapidly across the eastern Carolinas,? Hawkins said in Friday update. ?As a result of the strong low level wind field any thunderstorm has the potential to produce damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.?

But, the strength had weakened enough that Myrtle Beach only saw heavy rains with thunder and lightening.

Learn the Ways in Which Business Networking Can Beef Up Your ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Networking properly is all about you focusing your entire effort on networking with the right folks and growing a good list of contacts. Every single step that you take towards growing your business network will eventually help you get the most out your overall efforts, because the kind of progress that you achieve completely depends on how you partner with other people/businesses. The purpose of the following article is to give you a clear cut idea as to what you can do to ensure that you?re taking the right approach to business networking so that you get the best return on your time investment?

Cast a Wide Net: One of the biggest you can make when you are doing business networking is to prejudge people and to avoid networking with them. Don?t make this mistake because there is no way to tell which people can help you and how they will help you or how many referrals they will send in your direction. Don?t take your targeting too far because while this will help you in your marketing efforts it won?t help you when you do your business networking. In other words, your net should be casting as wide as you possibly can and network with as many people out there so that you can see how many benefits can be derived from them.

Know What You Want: How can you be expected to explain your purpose or what you want to potential networkers if you cannot identify them for yourself? So before you get started, determine what your goals are and what you seek to achieve with your business networking opportunity so that you?re able to get the most out of your efforts. Do not delay in doing this because if you want to get a good start in your business networking, you need to be very well equipped right from the very beginning. These same approaches are oftern used by people seeking Success in MLM

Use Effective Time Management: When you own and run your own business, lots of things demand your attention and building your contact list and business network are just a couple of them. However, since it?s critical that you give your best to network effectively, you should manage your time and see to it that you?re dedicating a good amount of time to grow your business network. Effective time management will help you in more than one way when it comes to business networking, always keep that in mind.

You need to put lots of prep into your business networking activities because if you just go on and on about it aimlessly, there?s a chance that you are going to wind up making only mediocre contacts who won?t really help you a lot. Make sure you?ve got an action plan so that your efforts to build your business network and enhance your business and move forward aren?t wasted. It is going to take some time before you really see results particularly if you are just starting out but if you make the right sorts of contacts, there isn?t anything like it.

Ways To Diagnose Children With Autism ? How To Determine ...

How To Determine Symptoms Of Children With Autism If you have watched the movie ?Rainman? starring Dustin Hoffman among others in the pivotal role of Raymond Babbitt, you already have been through one of the best audio-visual course in autism.

The classic movie is a real humdinger for all stakeholders in the domain of autism, especially child or infant autism where Dustin Hoffman perfectly portrays the role of an idiot savant constantly exploited by Charles Babbitt. (played by Tom Cruise). Although Raymond is successful in bringing about a complete metamorphosis in Charles, he himself remains oblivious of it.

But all autistic patients are not as bright as Raymond. Autism is a neurological disorder that starts manifesting at an early age. Symptoms of children with autism become apparent before a child is three years old. Autistic children can be segregated from their peer groups on the basis of their poor communication skills, inhibitions in social interaction and repetitive behavioral attitudes.

How to Determine Symptoms of Children With Autism

Autism is a neural disorder that affects the cognitive functions of the brain where there is disharmony amongst the synapses due to chemical imbalances. It is one of the cognitive disorders in the autism band, the other two being Asperger syndrome and PDD-NOS or Pervasive Development Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.

There are various opinions on the causes of autism although there is no unanimity on any single view or outlook. Some attribute it to genetic cause; others attribute it to birth defect carriers. Some theories border on the bizarre like autism can be caused by vaccines and inoculations.

Symptoms of children with autism become readily apparent during the first six months that are explicit and usually involve deficiencies in social interactions, inability to communicate and recurring or tedious behavior.

Diagnosis of Autism in Early Age and Screening for Diagnosis

Autism in infants is detected through the behavioral symptoms that start manifesting when the child is just six months old. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition lists a minimum of six symptoms for children with autism including symptoms mentioned above and also includes obsessive fixation with objects or parts of objects.

Ways To Diagnose Children With Autism

There are several diagnostic parameters for detecting autism and calibrating autism. Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule is one such rating scale that makes observations after interacting with the child.

A child specialist or a pediatrician tries to diagnose it by observing the child?s behavior and correlating the same with the clinically accepted symptoms of children with autism. He also reviews the development history of the child. Behavior and cognitive skills are also assessed.

In rare cases, it might become difficult to diagnose autistic patients having other inter-related psychiatric or neurotic disorders such as depression or manic depressive psychosis because of symptomatic overlap. Clinical evaluations are carried out to confirm the presence of genetic factors.

Treatment, Prognosis and Regulation of Autism in Children

It is a given that apart from the child who undergoes a lot of distress because of his or her autism, the families of autistic children also have to put up with a lot of stress.

Therefore, the family members especially the parents should be properly counseled to deal with such children so that their functional liberty and quality of life are not compromised. Finally, all those married couples or couples expecting their next baby should be thoroughly briefed about the clinical and congenital disorders and defects associated with children including symptoms of children with autism.

Hair Loss Blueprint ? Holistic Regrowth System For New Healthy ...

Hair Loss Blueprint - Holistic Regrowth System For New Healthy HairDreaming of a day when it?ll all be different. A day when you wake up? feel your head, and run your fingers through the thick full hair that have grown back, not the thinning pate that you are afraid to touch?

Are you tired of being the butt of constant cruel jokes, being compared as a Bruce Willis? wannabe loser twin, or laughing along with your friends about it even when that?s the last thing you feel like doing?

A feeling. One I?m sure you?ve felt before. It?s that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach whenever you look at the mirror. That dread as you approach it? that queasiness as you notice how much hair you?re losing again. The feeling of despair and helplessness to stop it no matter how you?ve tried in the past, the shame when you had to don a cap just to hide that balding spot.

And if you?re based in New York, hell, you may have even bumped into me on the bus.. or even fighting with me over a cab!

But in all seriousness, I?m a regular guy who had a great job, sweet ride and a nice pad, a lot of things which I was thankful for. I LOVED my life and had a great zest for it.

It was a Sunday morning when I looked into the mirror that fateful day and realized that my hairline was in fact receding. And I was ONLY 27!

But just when I thought things couldn?t get worse, a few months later, I started balding at the crown?

Every time I looked into the mirror, I started to hate myself more and more and my self-confidence started deteriorating rapidly.

It slowed the hair loss, but didn?t grow any new ones and was costing me almost a grand a month..

And they conveniently forgot to mention to me about the side effects (more on this later!) and how your hair will keep falling off at a FASTER RATE when you stop the drugs.

That obviously wasn?t going to work for me, so I scraped for more money and desperately paid for hair transplants instead?

? the curt reply was a simple ?We have a disclaimer that it may not work for everyone.?

Totally out of ideas, I used what was left on miracle cures, anything and everything online which promised the world.

Lesson learnt, those didn?t work for me and very likely wont work for most men on the planet?

? But if expensively ineffective programs are your cup of tea, then I?m sorry to have wasted your time, you should be someplace else but here.

Well, the drugs didn?t help, because of them, I started having dizzy spells at work, constant stomach pains and suffered a severe drop in confidence.

Almost overnight, from the happening ?Q-Rod? I became the butt-of-all-jokes ?Cue Ball?..

In retrospect, I think it was their way of telling me to bugger off but hell, I felt there was nothing left for me in the Big Apple, so I took the offer, packed up and left.

As fate would have it, I was sent to one of the most rural of areas in the world, Sarawak; posted to a job which involved as little human interaction as possible.

Being in the construction line, I was required to do a lot of planning work and most of it, I had to do it in the jungle..

Over the six months that I was there, I started warming to the natives there, they fondly called me ?Helang Botak? which they assured me was a ranking of respect in their colony. (I later found out it meant Bald Eagle, because I was American and well, bald!)

Anyway, I started undertaking small private projects on my own, to help build longhouses and improve their level of living and one fine day, my translator came up to me and said ?Helang, the ?penghulu? (leader) would like to have a word with you!?

Instantly, I thought I had done something wrong, maybe crossed a sacred land or did something taboo but curiosity did get the better of me, so I followed my translator into his home.

I couldn?t believe that I didn?t realize that the moment I stepped into their village. Men, women, children, people of all ages. They just had hair, and lots of it!

And when I stepped into the leader?s house, he told me that for the services I had rendered to his village, they were forever grateful and therefore wanted to help me with my ?problem?.

Naturally, I was skeptical but hey, after everything I had gone through, tried and tested, surely a free remedy wouldn?t hurt would it?

So I went ?with the program?, a secret concoction placed onto my scalp and massage techniques to stimulate growth..

I didn?t think much of it, after all, I?ve been let down by modern medicine so many times before?

Slowly but surely, they started sprouting out, first as fine strands and later, thick, healthy hair.

I could not believe what was happening and told myself ?Don?t get carried away, it may not last forever!?

My friends who used to tease me were initially shocked with the huge difference, they all thought it was a wig.

Several unsuccessful attempts of pulling it off didn?t work, and they?re now a believer that my hair has ?magically? grown again?

Initially, I was skeptical if it would work on them, I mean, what if I was the one-in-a-million shot which worked?

But knowing what these people were going through, I decided to look at the system given to me all those years ago back in Sarawak, to see if I could make it work for them?

After closely looking at the blueprint and translating the names they had used, I realized that the ?secret ingredients? which were used on my head, wasn?t such a big secret after? Read more?

Difficult Georgia Move | Articles Beloved

One of the most difficult things in this world is adapting to a new situation. At a young age I experienced this relocating from Georgia to Los Angeles. The whole method of relocating was difficult for me when I was young because my father did not tell me we were relocating. I was in my teenage years at the time living with only one parent. My dad was a contractor for this company for many years in Georgia and got offered a better business opportunity in California.

I first began to take in that we were moving when my father started selling most of our furniture and he began to pack up the home. I was then told to start to pack my belongings I got kind of scared and not sure what was to come. Little did I know that this was going to become an interesting journey.

When the Georgia movers showed up I recalled them packing all of our stuff and wrapping up what was left of our furniture. When they got to my room they picked up my glass eagle that my mother gave to me, and I remember following them all the way to the moving van to make sure it was packed safely. I was so scared that somehow the piece might be injured or lost during the move, and during such a stressful time in my life, the last thing I wanted to worry about was losing my prized possessions. After all, I was already saying goodbye to a lot of my friends.

In my luck, my father had some experience in hiring the best moving company in Georgia he was able to get in touch with. My glass statue and all of our other items arrived safely to our new home in California.

Nothing during the move was broken! The movers did use quite a bit of paper, tape, and other soft things to get the job done, but it worked! Because of the moving company in Georgia, the least difficult part of getting started with my new life was the move! Making friends starting a whole new life was a whole new challenge.

Sometimes you get lucky when choosing a Georgia moving company. And this time I can definitely say that we did. Relocating your items over two thousand miles while keeping all our things safe must have been a challenge for the movers but they did it!

Moving to California may have become one of the most difficult things to happen to me at that point in my life. I am very glad it happened because I met many great people and started a really loving family.

Teens in foster care need 'a break' to turn around their lives | ksl.com

CENTERVILLE ? Rosa McFarland had pretty much resigned herself to the idea that her life would probably turn out like that of her birth parents.

Neither parent finished high school. They were drug addicts and their lives were chaotic to the point that McFarland, then in elementary school, made frequent calls to police.

By age 8 she was placed in the state foster care system, where she and her siblings had multiple placements. By the time she was in her early teens, she simply hoped to be placed in a foster home where she would "feel comfortable" until she aged out of the system.

The odds of a teenager in Utah's foster care system finding a family willing to care for them is steep. Adoption? Even steeper, and the odds drop the closer the child gets to age 18.

A 2011 legislative audit showed that among nearly 1,300 licensed foster care families statewide, only about 200 were willing to care for children ages 14-18.

"There's this myth out there that children in foster care, particularly teenagers, are there because they've done something wrong. Something has happened to them to cause them to be removed from their primary caregivers or families of origin through no fault of their own," said Maryanne McFarland, who would care for and later adopt Rosa.

Some people become foster parents with the intent of adopting children they foster, which can mean they are more selective about the age of child they request.

"More people are open to that when the kids are younger," said Elizabeth Sollis, spokeswoman for the Utah Department of Human Services.?

Some teens, particularly those who have been in state custody for a number of years, may be more difficult to place because of mental health issues or other therapy requirements. "There might be a stipulation that the child can't be in a home with other kids. That can make it (placement) more difficult, too," Sollis said.

What foster teens need most "is structure, a safe environment and a connection to a caring adult that they can carry through their lives," said Mike Hamblin, director of foster family recruitment for the Utah Foster Care Foundation.

But with a scarcity of homes, stories like Rosa's become rare as teens move from home to home, or wind up in group homes.

"I never thought I'd have another family and that I'd belong," Rosa McFarland said.

"Who wants to keep a 17-year-old? Who wants to do that?"

When Maryanne and David McFarland met Rosa, they thought their association would last only a short time. Another couple was finalizing paperwork for her adoption and the McFarlands had agreed to take care of her until the process was completed, Rosa McFarland said.

But that first adoption was never finalized.

"They tried their hardest but it wasn't a good fit. I wasn?t in love with those people. I couldn't see myself being with those people forever," Rosa McFarland said.

When the adoption didn't work out, Rosa was headed to yet another placement, likely a group home. But by then she had become part of the McFarland family.

"We said, 'We don't need to go anywhere else'" to find her an adoptive home, Maryanne McFarland said. 'She belongs here,'"

By the numbers

Of nearly1,300 licensed foster care families statewide, only about 200 were willing to care for children ages 14-18. 30 percent of children who age out of foster care end up incarcerated.

With the love and guidance of her adoptive parents, she graduated from high school. She attended college for a while and now has a full-time job at an auto dealership. In recent years she's become reacquainted with some members of her birth family. Both her birth parents died of drug overdoses, she said.

"I didn't think I was adoptable. They did me the biggest favor saying they wanted to keep me," she said of her adoptive parents.

The McFarlands have seven children, all adopted. The couple has also fostered some 40 girls in state custody over the past nine years. Maryanne McFarland just calls them "my girls" and her relationship with many of them continues.

The McFarlands are the trusted pair many of the girls call when they've had a bad week, they need advice about a car repair or they want to share the happy news of an engagement or a pregnancy.

"My girls are just regular girls. They want to go to prom. They want have their nails done. They want to be girls and have fun and reach their goals. They have the same dreams as any teenage girl," she said.

Teenagers end up in foster care for the same reasons as younger children, "abuse or neglect in their biological homes," Hamblin said.

Finding them support by increasing the number of foster families is the focus of the Utah Foster Care Foundation, which will conduct three public forums featuring teenagers who have been in foster care as well as foster families that have experience with caring for teens.

Teens who don't forge bonds are less likely to graduate from high school, thus at higher risks of unemployment and homelessness. One study reports 30 percent of children who age out of foster care end up incarcerated.

Locally, roughly half of the teens and young adults served by Volunteers of America ? Utah's programs for homeless youth ? were in the state's foster care system at some point in their lives, said spokeswoman Michelle Templin.

"That's a pretty big number of kids who were involved in foster care or aged out of foster care who didn't have the skills or the financial resources to move into self-sufficiency," Templin said.

"There a lot of kids who need foster adoptions. They're really important to help young people grow into adults."

Maryanne McFarland said she and her husband have gleaned many life lessons from their experiences with the girls.

"When you hear their stories you think 'When is this kid going to get a break?' You'll see one thing upon another upon another that has happened. You think 'That kid needs a break.' That break could be you."

Rosa McFarland, now 27, has profound appreciation for the difference her adoptive family made in her life, as well as their ongoing efforts on behalf of teenage girls they care for as foster parents.

"They did me the biggest favor saying they wanted to keep me. I didn't think I was adoptable," Rosa McFarland said. "Nobody wants to be on their own. They want to be loved and cared for and comfortable."

The Utah Foster Care Foundation will host two public forums this month on the rewards and challenges of fostering teenagers.

Amnesty: Libyan militias commit war crimes

Armed militias now rule much of Libya, Amnesty International said Wednesday, accusing them of torturing detainees deemed loyal to the ousted regime of Moammar Gadhafi and driving entire neighborhoods and towns into exile.

Amnesty International quoted detainees as saying "They had been suspended in contorted positions; beaten for hours with whips, cables, plastic hoses, metal chains and bars, and wooden sticks and given electric shocks with live wires and taser-like electroshock weapons."

At least 12 detainees had died since September after torture, Amnesty said. "Their bodies were covered in bruises, wounds and cuts and some had had nails pulled off," the group said.

The report is a fresh blow to Libya's new government, the National Transitional Council, which helped lead the anti-Gadhafi uprising that broke out one year ago this week and spiraled into a brutal, eight-month civil war.

Since the war's end with the capture and killing of Gadhafi last October, the NTC has struggled to extend its control over the vast desert nation. It has largely failed to rein in the hundreds of brigades that fought in the war, many of which now run their own detention centers for those accused of links to Gadhafi's regime.

Amnesty said it visited 11 detention camps in central and western Libya in January and February, and found evidence of torture and abuse at all but one.

"Nobody is holding these militias responsible," Donatella Rovera, senior crisis response adviser at Amnesty International, told The Associated Press by telephone from Jordan on Wednesday, a day after she left Libya.

The U.N.'s top human rights official, and Amnesty International, have urged Libya's government to take control of all makeshift prisons to prevent further atrocities against detainees.

"There's torture, extrajudicial executions, rape of both men and women," U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said on Jan. 27.

Some 2,400 detainees remain held in centers controlled by the new Libyan government, but the militias are holding uncounted thousands more prisoners, Amnesty said. Most are in and around Tripoli and Misrata, the coastal city that saw some of the war's most brutal fighting, it said.

The International Committee of the Red Cross reported that from March to December 2011 it had visited over 8,500 detainees in some 60 detention centers.

Amnesty International's delegation witnessed detainees being beaten and threatened with death at a detention center in Misrata.

In a Tripoli detention center, they found severely tortured detainees who interrogators tried to conceal, the group reported. It spoke to detainees held in and around Tripoli, Gharyan, Misrata, Sirte and Zawiya.

The humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders suspended its work in prisons in Misrata in late January because it said torture was so rampant that some detainees were brought for care only to make them fit for further interrogation and abuse.

Rovera accused the Tripoli-based national government of "a lack of political will. They're not willing to recognize the scale of the problem. It is way, way beyond individual cases. It's an irresponsible attitude," she said.

The militias were one of the keys to the rebellion that toppled Gadhafi's 42-year rule last year, but they are maintaining their independence from the National Transitional Council.

Hundreds of Libyan militias commemorated the anniversary of the anti-Gadhafi uprising this week by allying into a new unified military council.

Thousands of fighters from across western Libya held a mass parade in Tripoli on Tuesday, showing off heavy machine guns and rocket launchers and firing rifles in the air, an outburst that appeared intended as a warning to anyone who might stage attacks during the anniversary.

Some of the militia reprisals are against dark-skinned Libyans and African contract workers who the Gadhafis had brought in for jobs ranging from construction to security and riot control, leading to attacks on so-called "mercenaries" during the uprising.

"African migrants and refugees are also being targeted and revenge attacks are being carried out," Amnesty said. "Entire communities have been forcibly displaced and authorities have done nothing to investigate the abuses and hold those responsible to account."

The violence took on an ethnic twist. "It's hunting down 'the other,'" Rovera told the AP. "They're wreaking havoc in the community."

Amnesty said that militias from Misrata "drove out the entire population of Tawargha, some 30,000 people, and looted and burned down their homes in revenge for crimes some Tawargha are accused of having committed during the conflict."

"Thousands of members of the Mashashya tribe were similarly forced out of their village by militias from Zintan, in the Nafusa Mountains. These and other communities remain displaced in makeshift camps around the country," Amnesty said.

Amnesty called for Western pressure on the Libyan government and militias.

Rovera said that from the United States to Europe, "There are a lot of countries and governments seeking contracts in Libya, so there's no shortage of contacts" that the West can use.

Europe, the U.S. and NATO "should tell them things as they are ? the time for 'wait and see' has run out," Rovera told the AP.

Autostraddle ? Santorum, Fox News Add Women in the Military to ...

The national focus on the repeal of DADT helped make us more aware as a nation that there's still plenty of inequality within the ranks of the military of this bastion of democracy, home of the free. For instance, the fact that even within DADT, black women tended to be very disproportionately affected, or that trans people's rights to serve aren't protected, or that even after the repeal of DADT, the partners and spouses of queer servicemembers still weren't eligible for the same rights as those of straight people's partners. And lest we forget, both before and during and after DADT, women of all sexual orientations have always occupied a different and unequal space in the military -- a fact that we were all reminded of this week when a Fox News commentator suggested that instead of demanding a solution to the hugely disproportionate amount of sexual harassment and assault they experience, women in the military should "expect to get raped", and Rick Santorum's opposition to opening up any combat positions to women because they have "emotions."

While Fox commentator Liz Trotta and Rick Santorum's comments are both shockingly problematic, Santorum's are perhaps not uncommon in the general populace. In the same way that you often hear people profess that the gendered wage gap is a natural result of the fact that "women like caring professions, like being a nurse, while men are more drawn to higher-paying jobs," there are plenty of people who think that however sincere a woman's desire to serve her country, she's crippled by emotional reactions that are so strong they hinder the decisionmaking skills and putting training into action that combat requires. Santorum helpfully observed that "men have emotions when you see a woman in harm's way," which aside from being paternalistic and grammatically incorrect, implies that not only can women not do their jobs well, but they also actively prevent others from doing their jobs well.

Of course, the actual evidence contradicts Santorum's view -- as the Washington Post observes, even Newt Gingrich thinks he's wrong, which is saying something. Although new combat positions are indeed being opened up to women for the first time, it's not a decision the military took lightly; it comes after a comprehensive review in which it was decided that female servicemembers' talents were in fact good fits for the positions at hand, and believe it or not, they were competent employees. It's also worth noting that women already perform many of these more dangerous duties:

In actual practice, however, women already serve in many of those jobs, but as temporary ?attachments? to battalions ? a bureaucratic sidestep that has been necessary with the high demand for troops during the last decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Pentagon?s new rules largely formalize existing arrangements and in many ways are simply catching up with realities on the battlefield.

Trotta's comments on sexual assault are horrying, and a closer look at her words reveals that she's not just misguided about women in the military, but coming from a deeply misogynistic place of rape apologism in the first place. She complains, for instance, that the issue is being brought up by feminists who complain that women in the military are being "raped too much" -- the implication that there is some other level at which women could experience rape that is somehow acceptable is nauseating. When confronted with the fact that the DoD reported sexual assault on women increasing by 64% over the last six years, she responded with?"Now, what did they expect? These people are in close contact."

While Santorum assumes that women are completely without emotional control and can't make sound decisions when influenced by feeling (although of course each of us does that on a daily basis, and anyone with children has to make heart-stopping decisions while experiencing strong emotions constantly), Trotta assumes that men are completely without the capacity for decisionmaking when it comes to violence -- that rape is a natural consequence of men and women interacting, especially if the men are under stress or pressure. Both are equally unfair depictions of an entire gender, and both completely dehumanize everyone involved. Santorum's emphasis on women's emotional response to war completely ignores that of course men have one too; war is a deeply traumatizing experience, and to pretend women can't do their job because they have human feelings implies that men are good at their job because they are somehow without the capacity for human feeling, ?which is deeply disrespectful of the experience that both male and female servicemembers have in combat. Liz Trotta simultaneously tells us that women don't deserve legal protection or the right to their own bodies (or somehow no longer deserve those rights because they've done something very brave in trying to serve their country?) and that men can't be expected to maintain basic levels of respect for their fellow human or restrain themselves from the monstrous violence that's inherent to them, which seems like a terribly unfair depiction of our armed forces.

The more inequity we become aware of in the armed forces, the clearer it becomes that it's virtually always harmful to our servicemembers. Often overseas, cut off from family and loved ones, and bearing the brunt of criticism of military decisions made by their superiors, every internal injustice they're made to suffer makes their lives harder and our military as a whole weaker. If the 'debate' on women in the military's competence (science generally backs the idea that women who undergo intensive training are capable of strenuous combat work, at least at levels comparable to men) shows us anything, it's that women don't earn respect for their abilities no matter what those abilities are, even when they're willing to put their lives on the line. If Santorum is looking to bring something new to the GOP candidacy, this isn't it.
