Lower Swatara Township commissioners consider 35 percent ...

Lower Swatara Township residents could see their first increase in real estate taxes in eight years for 2013, a large one of 35 percent.

Township commissioners spent nearly two hours on Wednesday night mulling over how to solve a $332,404 deficit within the municipality?s $5 million budget proposal.

Commissioner Michael Davies, chairman of the Finance Committee, recommended a 0.75 mill tax increase for the general fund, which is now 2.5 mills, and a 0.22 rise to the fire tax, now 0.27 mills.

Davies said a mandated $250,000 contribution increase to the state retirement pension system is a leading cause of the deficit. Commissioners also wrestled with whether to hire at least three police officers.

Commissioners plan to vote on a tentative budget at 7 p.m. Nov. 21. A final vote is scheduled for Dec.19.

WHAT IT MEANS:

?A 0.97-mill tax increase means that the owner of property assessed at $100,000 would pay an additional $97 annually for a total of $324.
