Health and fitness app costs spike 25 per cent around New Year ...

App developers slyly bump prices up knowing that consumers will want to shift Christmas weight.

A quarter of mobile users plan to use smartphones and tablets to achieve their New Year's resolutions this year, with 28 per cent of those planning to track their fitness with the devices. That's good news for developers, but it's bad news for consumers.

Mobile security provider Norton reports that the price of health and fitness apps spiked 25 per cent during Q4 to peak on New Year's Day ? the first day that many start health kicks ??knowing consumers will want to shift weight after excessive eating across the Christmas season.

Richard Clooke, mobile security expert at Norton, said: "Smartphone users are paying a premium on fitness apps in January. However our data also shows that these seem to be temporary price hikes as app providers respond to increased consumer demand.

"Within a few weeks the bubble bursts, and prices fall back to their usual prices in March. The price of an app is still much lower than a gym membership; however it might prove cheaper to buy some apps out of season."
